Google Advertising Jargon Explained

OK so you know you need to advertise, great! Here’s a quick list of what all the lovely terms will mean…

PPC (Pay Per Click Advertising) is where you pay the search engine only when your ad is clicked. The most widespread and popular PPC platform is Google AdWords (of course).

Google Adwords - Google’s flagship advertising platform and offers PPC advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads (like copy and display). The AdWords program includes local, national, and international distribution. Google’s text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines as well as a display URL.

Ads are always shown to the right or on the top of the “organic” search results on Google as can be seen on the example below.

CPC – Cost Per Click – the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on your ad.

Impressions - The number of impressions is the number of times an ad is displayed on Google or on sites or products in the Google Network.

CTR – Click-through Rate is a way of measuring the success of a PPC campaign. It is obtained by dividing the number of users who clicked on an AdWords ad by the number of impressions for that ad. You know, how many looked at it compared to how many people thought it relevant enough to click.

Google Ad Network is a large group of websites and other products, email programs and blogs, that sort of thing, who have partnered with Google to display AdWords ads. The trick is to make sure you are using the right network…
